On September 28th, 2017 professionals who serve the counties of Bradford, Columbia, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Pike, Sullivan, Susquehanna, Wayne, and Wyoming traveled to The University of Scranton for a day of training entitled Experience the Employment Connection.
Perhaps it was the college campus venue selection, or perhaps it was the “back-to-school mentality” of September, but transition-age students with disabilities were on the minds of EEC Wilkes-Barre participants. Attendees discussed methods for engaging students with disabilities and their families prior to transition, early in their school career.
Participants in the Leadership Session expressed a desire for professionals who work to assist students with disabilities in obtaining meaningful, integrative employment to meet with students well before they leave high school, to start discussing their career options and provide them with an opportunity to dream big.
Overall, participants were reminded to prioritize students with disabilities and work to increase their participation in transition initiatives and other important events. Resources such as Pennsylvania ABLE Savings Program were discussed, and participants were encouraged to seek their next “success story.
